Dixons Ashton Academy

Careers education

The Dixons Ashton Academy careers programme aims to provide all students with regular access to employers, expert guidance and workplace experiences to support students in making informed and educated decisions about their next steps.

To help in keeping our students' aspirations on track, we provide them with careers education right from the start of their journey with us. This is in part delivered by our personal values curriculum which is delivered in Years 7 to10.

Key Stage 3 careers

All students are introduced to careers education through PSHE lessons, form sessions, planned events, assemblies and have access to the CEIAG team through drop-in sessions.

Key Stage 4 careers

All students are introduced to careers education through life education lessons and have access to the CEIAG team through drop-in sessions. Every student will be seen for a careers guidance interview.

Our careers lead, Mrs James can be contacted via email.

Can your organisation help?

Can you or your organisation inspire young people about your workplace, share your insights into what it takes to succeed in the workplace, or offer ‘real-life’ projects to give young people the opportunity to experience the world of work?

More than ever, it’s vital the Greater Manchester’s young people are connected to the world of work.

  • Young people have said through the Young Person’s Guarantee, that they would like more experiences of the workplace and to connect with organisations and role models that represent them and their communities.

How can you get involved?

Please get in touch with Theresa James, careers lead for further information.

To help contextualise the purpose of a students education beyond the joy of learning, at the start of every lesson an enterprise, professionalism and employability objective is set. This objective links the lesson to specific careers, specific skills and employability qualities students will develop through engagement with the lesson.

The Gatsby Benchmarks are a set of eight guidelines that define the best careers provision in schools and colleges. We have support from an enterprise coordinator from Bridge GM at GMCA (Greater Manchester Combined Authority) and an enterprise advisor from a local business.

  • Enterprise Coordinator, Sarah Power

  • Enterprise Advisor, Aaron Unsworth (Social Value Partner at Fortem)

Careers education is a team effort and the responsibility of all teaching and pastoral staff. There is a range of resources and examples of curriculum projects below. You can also speak to the school’s careers leader, enterprise coordinator and / or the enterprise adviser for more information and guidance.
